Psychiatry

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. Consultant Psychiatrist at the Banyans, Dr Anja Kriegeskotten, uses a variety of methods during her consultations, including counselling, prescription medications, pathology tests, and physical examinations, to determine the most effective treatment for guests who are living with mental health conditions or working to overcome substance misuse or abuse.

Addiction Medicine Specialist

The Banyans Health and Wellness ensures individuals experiencing addiction or dependency concerns are safe and well supported as they move towards long-lasting recovery. Dr Christian Rowan is an Addiction Medicine Specialist and provides medical guidance to the support team and guests throughout their recovery programs. Dr Rowan also advises  guests with regards to relapse prevention in order to encourage sustainable change.

General Practitioners

On arrival, every guest attends a consultation with one of our trusted general practitioners. Medical professionals ensure guests are in a safe and stable state for the commencement of their programs, and provide guidance regarding any other relevant concerns. If necessary, guests may be referred to a private hospital for medically assisted detoxification or other medical treatment.

Registered nurses are onsite at The Banyans, and provide essential, ongoing medical support to guests. The nursing team works collaboratively to monitor a guest’s physical health and wellbeing at every stage of their residential phase.

Addiction Medicine Specialist
Dr Christian Rowan

Dr Christian has more than two decades of experience in the field of addiction and dependency, and is one of Australia’s leading medical professionals. His clinical interests include prescription drug dependency, opioid substitution therapy, and co-morbidity pertaining to pain conditions and substance disorders. Dr Rowan is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians’ Chapter of Addiction Medicine, and a member of the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs.

Dr Anja Kriegeskotten

Dr Anja Kriegeskotten brings vital medical support to The Banyans programs. Dr Kriegeskotten has extensive experience in a range of therapeutic treatments, including a special interest in trauma. Dr Kriegeskotten is also trained and certified to use the EAGALA model of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. She is highly specialised in this mode of therapy, engaging in over 6,000 hours of training and professional practice. Working in psychiatry since 1997, Dr Kriegeskotten has worked across Australia in a wide variety of settings.

Trish Bowden

Trish completed her training as a registered nurse in Brisbane more than 30 years ago and has continued to gain exceptional qualifications in nursing, midwifery, and diabetes education. Trish values being a part of the medical support team at The Banyans Health and Wellness. She monitors the physical health of our guests as they transition through the recovery process. Trish enjoys the role she plays in assisting guests medically and supporting them to heal, gain strength, and depart The Banyans with a positive outlook towards life.
