More information about Halal or Muslim friendly rehab

According to the Islamic Council of Victoria, “Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. In reference to food, it is the dietary standard, as prescribed in the Qur’an (the Muslim scripture).”

Although frequently used in reference to food and dietary preferences, Halal can also apply to cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals.

There are two parts to Halal:

  • the foods or products themselves; and
  • the materials used to process, make, produce, manufacture and/or store the food stuffs.

The foods themselves must be permitted for consumption according to the Islamic Law. Similarly, the machinery, utensils and other materials that have interacted with the food must be cleansed according to Islamic law.

The most common items that are not permitted (or are haram, the opposite of Halal) are:

  • Pork, bacon and ham (and it’s fat);
  • Lard;
  • Alcoholic drinks and intoxicants; and
  • Gelatine from non-halal sources;
  • Any meat that has not been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic Halal Meat Preparation and Supervision regulations.

There are many contributors to a program being “Muslim friendly.” At the end of the day, it will depend on the individual if a rehab program will respect and accommodate their beliefs appropriately.

At The Banyans, we consider Halal or Muslim friendly to mean:

  • Accommodating Halal dietary preferences, including the respectful sourcing, transportation and creation of Halal friendly dishes by our chefs;
  • One-on-one treatment and therapy to ensure you receive counsel, education and support that is specifically aligned to your values and beliefs;
  • Flexible schedules and activities to allow continued engagement in religious rituals and observations, such as prayer and Sabbath;
  • Providing private spaces for interrupted prayer and devotion, such as a guests suite;
  • Displays of respect towards people of any faith background;
  • Acceptance of guests wearing head coverings or other clothing that aligns with their religious beliefs.

For more specific information regarding how The Banyans approach programs for people of faith, please call our Intake Team on 1300 BANYAN (+61 1300 226 926) or email our team at [email protected].

Religion is an important value to an individual, and often plays a big role in one’s recovery journey. For those who observe religions with behavioural rituals or laws (such as Halal or Kosher), accommodating these preferences can make rehab and recovery much less stressful.

Moreover, incorporating your exisiting beliefs into your treatment and therapeutic approach can increase the likelihood of long-term recovery.

No, you will not. The personalised and tailored nature of each program at The Banyans means that each guest engages in a unique program, based on their needs and preferences. Your treatment program will not be impacted by the religious background of others in the residence.
