Grief is not a clinical condition. It is one of the most human experiences there is, and most people move through it with the support of family, community, and time. Sometimes, though, grief becomes something else: a depression that doesn’t lift, anxiety that no longer feels manageable, sleep that won’t return, a reliance on alcohol or other substances to take the edge off, or a sense of being stuck in the early acuteness of loss months or years after others have expected things to ease.
The Banyans offers private, one-on-one residential and day programs for people experiencing complicated grief, prolonged grief, or loss that has become entangled with depression, anxiety, trauma, or substance use. Care is delivered by a coordinated clinical team across our Brisbane hinterland residence and Brisbane day program facility. Our grief and loss treatment programs are designed for people whose experience of loss has become clinically significant, and who need depth of care alongside genuine privacy. Each program is built around your individual circumstances, the nature of your loss, and what you need most, with one-on-one sessions across the clinical team.
There is a difference between mourning, which is something most people navigate without clinical intervention, and grief that has compounded into a clinical presentation. The second is what The Banyans is positioned to treat.
Prolonged grief, complicated grief, and grief that has become entangled with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, or substance use often need more than supportive counselling can offer. At The Banyans, your care is delivered by a coordinated multidisciplinary team in one place. Medical and psychiatric review, individual psychological therapy, Dietetics, and exercise physiology are integrated into a single program, with the clinical team meeting regularly to review your progress and adjust your plan.
The clinical work is paced carefully. Grief work is not about moving past the loss or returning to who you were before. It is about finding a way to carry what has happened that allows the rest of your life to continue, and addressing the clinical patterns, including sleep disruption, biochemical depletion, depression, and substance use, that have made that carrying harder than it should be.
The Banyans is a nationally accredited grief and loss treatment centre offering private residential and day programs for complicated grief, prolonged grief, and loss that has become clinically significant. Our model centres on one-on-one care, complete discretion, and recognition that loss reshapes people in ways that take time and clinical depth to navigate.
Many people seeking grief and loss treatment have already engaged with bereavement counsellors, GPs, or psychologists. For most, this is enough. For some, it is not, and the question becomes where to find clinical depth that goes further. Your care at The Banyans is medically led, multidisciplinary, and shaped to your individual presentation rather than a fixed bereavement protocol.
There is no group therapy, no shared rooms, and no waiting list. For some people, the experience of grief is private by nature, or has become tangled with shame, guilt, or circumstances that make group settings difficult. Your sessions are one-on-one, and your environment, particularly in residential care, is genuinely your own.
Loss rarely arrives alone. It often surfaces or amplifies depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, sleep disruption, and substance use that has become a way of getting through. Your clinical team addresses these together rather than separately, with attention to the physical and biochemical impact of prolonged grief alongside the emotional and psychological work.
Each guest is assessed for clinical suitability to ensure the right program is the right fit, whether that’s residential care, a day program, or a combination of the two. The Banyans Health Plus offers our day rehab programs in Brisbane as a structured step-down from residential rehab or standalone option, with continued one-on-one access to the clinical team. Aftercare support is available for up to two years following your program, particularly important for grief where the anniversary cycle and ongoing waves of loss often need continued clinical support over time.
The Banyans’ residential program provides intensive, one-on-one care in a fully private hinterland residence, suited to people whose grief has become clinically significant and who would benefit from time away from environments closely associated with the loss. Time and space are often what grief work most requires, and residential care offers both, alongside coordinated clinical input across medical, psychiatric, psychological, nutritional, and physical disciplines. Program length is shaped to your clinical needs, with options ranging from focused stays to extended engagement for more complex presentations, including grief compounded by depression, trauma, or substance use.
The Banyans Health Plus offers our day programs in Brisbane, providing one-on-one clinical care for people who need clinical depth but cannot step away from family, work, or other responsibilities, including caring for others affected by the same loss. Sessions run weekly over eight weeks with one-on-one access to psychologists, dietitians, and clinical specialists. Day programs can be accessed standalone or as a structured continuation of residential care.
